Revolut Outage: Why Is It Important to Have a Choice of Payment Methods?

You’re buying medicine for your child at a pharmacy. Or you’ve just filled up your car at a petrol station on the other side of the country. You have enough money in your account, but your card payment is declined. You try again. No luck. You look for help, but there’s no one you can speak to immediately.

The money is yours. The account is yours. But at that moment, you can’t access your money in the way you normally would.

On October 20, 2026, a technical outage affected Revolut’s services. Some customers experienced difficulties with card payments and accessing financial services.

The incident raised an important question: Is having money in the bank enough to be financially independent?

And it reminded us of three important lessons.

Lesson #1: Don’t rely on just one payment method

We’re used to paying by card or through a mobile app. It’s convenient, fast, and usually works seamlessly. But what happens when technology lets us down?

This is where direct bank payments – Pay by Bank – offer a valuable alternative.

When a merchant offers IRIS Pay – direct payments from a bank account, customers can choose which bank they want to pay from and authorize the payment through their online banking.

No need to enter card details. No reliance on card payment networks.

If their usual payment method isn’t working, customers can use an account with another supported bank, provided its services are available.

Having a choice of payment methods is more than just a convenience. Sometimes, it makes the difference between completing a purchase and being unable to pay at all.

Lesson #2: One bank account isn’t always enough

Revolut and other digital financial platforms have transformed banking by making financial services faster, more convenient, and easier to access.

But relying on a single provider comes with risks. If all your payments, transfers, and income go through one institution, a technical issue can temporarily disrupt your entire financial routine.

Our advice is to maintain an active account with a bank that also has a physical presence in the country where you live.

This gives you not only an alternative way to access your funds but also the option to receive assistance at a bank branch or over the phone in your own language.

Of course, having access to a physical branch doesn’t guarantee an immediate solution during a technical outage, but it does provide an additional support channel.

Financial independence doesn’t mean choosing between a digital bank and a traditional one. It means making the most of both.

Lesson #3: Multiple bank accounts, one clear view of your money

If you have two or three bank accounts, does that mean constantly switching between different banking apps?

Not necessarily.

Thanks to Open Banking, multibanking services now allow you to view information from accounts held at different banks in one place, monitor balances and transactions, and, with certain solutions, even initiate payments.

IRIS Solutions develops precisely this type of technological infrastructure, enabling banks, fintech companies, and financial platforms to offer services for managing accounts across multiple banks.

Multibanking cannot restore access to a bank whose systems are down. But it provides better visibility and greater convenience when managing personal finances.

And what’s the lesson for merchants?

When a customer has money but cannot pay, both sides lose.

For customers, it means inconvenience, frustration, and sometimes even being unable to purchase an essential product or service. For merchants, it means the risk of a lost sale and an unhappy customer.

That’s why offering multiple payment methods is much more than an additional feature. It’s part of building a resilient business.

An online store that accepts only card payments depends entirely on the availability of that payment channel.

With IRIS Pay, merchants can also offer direct payments from bank accounts – an alternative that operates independently of card payment networks.

And when customers have accounts with different banks, they can choose which one they prefer to pay from.

Because the worst time to discover that your customer has no alternative way to pay is when they’re already ready to buy.

True financial freedom means having a choice

The Revolut outage doesn’t mean digital banking is unreliable. Technical problems can affect any bank, payment provider, or technology.

But the incident reminded us of something important: it’s not enough for our money to be kept somewhere safe. We also need more than one way to use it.

For consumers, that means having more than one bank account and the freedom to choose how to pay.

For merchants, it means offering more ways to accept payments and reducing dependence on a single payment channel.

Because the future of finance isn’t about relying on one bank, one card, or one app.

The future is about the freedom to choose.
